Football Season Entertainment Determined

Alex Smith. The San Francisco 49ers have chosen Mr. Smith as their #1 draft pick. Dude is only 21 years old. And they say he needs to bulk up a bit, which I agree with. And if someone can get a handle on his eyebrow waxing issue, well girls, I may have determined my official entertainment for this football season.

It's about time I freshened up the football knowledge anyway. Without Rob The Football God around, I'm not able to spout stats and who's going where and so on. I have always leaned more towards the coaches' erratic (and often amusing) behavior, funny looking players and their names for my entertainment. Rhyming players' names to make silly nicknames during intense play isn't normally appreciated by real fans - just a tidbit of knowledge I picked up along the way.

Last year I participated in a football pool at work. Miami was playing that week, so I asked bald Capricorn dude in accounting if the injury report was out yet, because I needed to know if Marino would be playing. I got laughed out of finance and teased for the rest of the season.

I was surprised to see Joe Theismann commentating instead of playing for the Redskins. Yes folks, I prefer to live in the dark ages of football when things were good. Or at least that's what I tell people who wonder why I am so hopelessly out of touch with current football.

So this year, if I am subjected to many a game once again, I have at least gotten started on my own entertainment. Throw in some dreads and a little hissy fit throwing by my favorite coach, and it should be a good season.

How to Temper Enthusiasm

I didn't realize I was such an enthusiastic being until recently, when I've really just had to take things down a notch and chill. It's hard. I'd rather do cartwheels in the parking lot of my complex any day than sit demurely with my legs crossed, nodding with very deliberate un-enthusiasm. But this is what I must do. I must quell the giddiness, stomp out the hopefulness and just wait things the fuck out. It's really for my own good, but I feel my heart becoming shrouded with a black sheer scarf when I take this approach. It's not living NOW and it's not conducive to my soul happiness. Yet is for my own good.

It's still important for me to express myself whenever it is "safe" to do so. I hate feeling stifled and careful. So when TSM asked if I would like to take my very first motorcycle ride yesterday, I almost jumped out of my shoes with enthusiasm!

I lowered my ponytail and slid a helmet on for the first time. As soon as it was on, I got nervous. I wondered if I looked like one of the bad ass chicks on Playstation Road Rash (probably not). I mounted the bike like the mechanical bull and gripped TSM's leather jacket pockets. I felt exposed, open, vulnerable and scared. But I trust TSM, and knew I was safe as long as I didn't do anything irrational as a nervous passenger.

We started out slow, and when we drove over a very small bump, I screamed and gripped his pockets. I think he was kind of laughing at me, but he asked if I was okay, and we drove up Pembroke Road. We got up to 45 mph (believe me, I kept a close eye) and after my muscles relaxed, I really started to enjoy the ride. TSM counseled me a bit on my "turn" behavior, and prepared me for upcoming turns. He has been riding since the age of 10 and is a confident, stable driver. I am glad he was my "first", because I never felt in danger or out of control.

At the end of the ride, I thought I really should have done this years ago! And what had I been afraid of? It was nothing but fun, and I would love to ride out somewhere for the day and just relax on the back of a bike.

When we got back, we discussed how my new thoughts on motorcycles opened up a whole new segment of the population I could date! It's nice to share enthusiasm with friends and I impulsively gave him a big hug to thank him for the experience.

I felt great the rest of the night (even with helmet hair) and I look forward to long rides in the future with someone special who not only likes, but encourages my enthusiasm!

Reliability in the Face of Uncertainty - My Sneakers

I wake up and I know my running shoes will be there. They wait for me and they're never far. Lately they are the only true certainty in my life.

They wait for me to eat some cottage cheese and maybe take a shower. They wait until I decide what t-shirt to wear and sometimes they even wait for me to answer an email or two. If I take too long, they get impatient and a little antsy, and they call out to my feet, making them tingle and making me want to grab some Thorlos and get the hell out and go to the gym, or to the track.

But they are always there. They support me in whatever I need to do on any given day. On rare occasions, sometimes they just come with me to the store and that is all. But they whisper to me that if I would like to run, I may, and they will be there.

We have plans, these shoes and I. Not to schlep comfortably through a shopping mall, not to explore that long ass Vegas strip and certainly not to meander through interesting wine tastings with whomever the current object of desire may be. No, no, no.

We are about getting shit done. About stretching the hamstrings, bicycling, walking and jogging the track, squatting a decent amount of weight, getting to the level of fitness I desire and want almost more than anything. My sneaks are my partner in crime, my support, my wake up call, my daily affirmation that I am real, I am here and I must make use of my time. My only true certainty.

The Boob Issue

Ok, so the adhesive bra didn't work and it almost ended up on the male bartender's head (as a patron contribution to the collection, of course) at the Salty Dog Saloon.

Thank God I am always prepared with a back up plan, so only my left inner thigh (?) emerged bruised from the bull, and the boobies stayed protected all night.

I guess as one becomes leaner and more and more fit, the body fat decreases and the boobs, primarily made up of (ewww..) body fat, also decrease. The trade off is a smaller, firmer butt. Which is cool. But boobies are also cool. What to do?

A mature man - not sure if he's an experienced mechanical bullrider, though - had this to say on boobs:

"I like woman who understands what it is to be a woman - a woman of power...

I like a woman who knows how to hold herself both in public and in private... And when little girls see these types of women, they step back and they step down...

I like a woman who has intensity - the passion to live and to love without regret - but yet not be hurtful to herself or others - a person of class...

I like a woman who know what she stands for - a woman who has values...

I like the older woman, You know, the 30ish - 40ish woman who knows how to smile at life.

Over the years, I have met many good looking people - the so called bombshell babes with boobs - and... some without(?) However, once they open their mouths and start speaking their thoughts - and have nothing to say... they start looking ugly... many men are the same way...

I also like a woman who knows how to be a very bad girl when the time calls for it - a woman who knows how to sweat and sweating has nothing to do with cup size...
"

Amen, brother.

I have to admit, it is nice to jog without all the heavy jiggle. My body is still changing, so who knows what will happen. My ass is coming back, my tummy is leaner and my boobs are very well moisturized! Haha! To be free in one's body is a blessing. To stretch, to roll around, to bend, to SQUAT... those are all wonderful things. Some outdoors Tai Chi would hit the spot right about now... boobs nicely encased and out of the way of all my fluid and graceful movements - sort of like when I was bullriding... HA!!!!!!!!

A Pretty Accurate Personality Test

So... are you a Big Thinker, Counsellor, Go-getter, Idealist, Innovator, Leader, Mastermind, Mentor, Nurturer, Peacemaker, Performer, Provider, Realist, Resolver, Strategist or a Supervisor?

My answers suggest I am a Realist .
The four aspects that make up this personality type are:

Summary of Realists
* Loyal and steady workers who meet deadlines
* Believe in established rules and respect facts
* Think of themselves as mature, stable and conscientious
* May appear too logical or tough-minded and forget their impact on other people

More about Realists
Realists are loyal to the people around them and work hard to keep their promises. They are honest and straightforward with others and expect the same in return. Realists believe in standard procedures and will only support change when there is a demonstrable benefit.

Realists are the most common personality type in the UK, according to a nationwide survey (should I move to London? Is this where my people are?).

Realists respect factual information, which they store up to use when making decisions. This group likes to have time to think quietly and carefully before taking action.

These extremely productive people like to be occupied in their leisure time with pursuits such as craftwork, hiking or reading.

In situations where they can't use their talents or are unappreciated, Realists may become obsessed with schedules, critical of others or have trouble trusting other people to get the job done properly. Under extreme stress, Realists may complain loudly that events have taken a turn for the worse and predict negative outcomes.

Realists typically only share their opinions or personal experiences with trusted friends.

Realist Careers
Realists are attracted to jobs where decision making based on factual knowledge and experience is required.

What Are REALLY Life's Priorities?

Being a Hard Worker vs. Being a Workaholic

Workaholism can manifest as many problems as having a substance abuse problem, being an alcoholic, or having an eating disorder. It is often difficult to detect because our society condones this DIS-EASE. Here are some examples of differences between being a hard worker and being a workaholic…(adapted from Chained to the Desk by Bryan Robinson, Family Therapy Networker, July/Aug., 2000)

-Hard workers experience their work as a necessary & at times fulfilling obligation….
Vs.
Workaholics see their work as a place of safety from the unpredictableness of life and distance from unwanted feelings &/or commitments.

-Hard workers know when to set limits on their work in order to be fully available and present for their family, friends, and to be able to participate in play…
Vs.
Workaholics allow their work to take top billing over all other areas of their life. Commitments to family, friends, and their children are often made and then broken to meet work demands.

-Workaholics get an adrenalin rush from meeting impossible demands…
Vs.
Hard workers do not.

-Hard workers can turn off their work appetite…
Vs.
Workaholics cannot Not Work. They remain preoccupied with work even if they are playing golf with friends or attending their children’s sporting events. The mind of the workaholic continues to grind away about work issues/problems to be fixed.

GETTING THE PICTURE?

If you are curious about how workaholic you might be, I invite you to take the WORKAHOLIC ADDICTION RISK TEST (WART).

WORKAHOLIC ADDICTION RISK TEST
(From Chained to the Desk by Bryan Robinson, 1998)

To find out if you are a workaholic, rate yourself on the WART using the rating scale of 1 (never true), 2 (sometimes true), 3 (often true), or 4 (always true). Put the number that best describes your work habits in the Blank beside each statement.

After you have responded to all 25 statements, add the numbers in the Blanks for your total score. The higher your score (highest possible is 100), the more likely you are to be a workaholic; the lower your score (lowest possible is 25), the less likely you are to a workaholic.

_____ 1. I prefer to do most things rather than ask for help.

_____ 7. I over commit myself by biting off more than I can chew.

_____ 9. It’s important that I see the concrete results of what I do.

_____ 22. I get upset with myself for making even the smallest mistake.
_____ 23. I put more thought, time and energy into my work than I do into my relationships with loved ones and friends.
_____ 24. I forget, ignore or minimize celebrations, such as birthdays, reunions, and anniversaries or holidays.
_____ 25. I make important decisions before I have all the facts and have a chance to think them through.

Those scoring in the upper third (67-100) are considered highly workaholic. If you scored in this range, it could mean that you are on your way to burnout, and new research suggests that family members may be experiencing emotional repercussions as well.

Those scoring in the middle range (57-66) are considered mildly workaholic. If you scored in this range, there is hope. With acceptance and modifications, you and your loved ones can prevent negative lasting effects.

Those scoring in the lowest range (25-56) are considered not workaholic. If you scored in this range, you probably are a Hard Worker instead of a workaholic. You needn’t worry that your work style will negatively affect yourself or others.

Those Evil, Evil Peeps

Yes, Peeps are back for Easter. Damn them.

How do you resist a Peep? Some people don't like them at all, and these are not my peeps. I can understand resisting the non-Easter Peeps, like Halloween Peeps or the weird Christmas tree Peeps. You can only stretch a Peep so far. But a yellow Easter Peep is far more special. The original, the classic.

Everyone knows "Peep" when you talk about Peeps. But what about the Bunnies? I must confess, I'm a bigger Bunny fan than Peep fan.

Peeps seem to have developed a cult-like following fairly recently. JustBorn, the company in Pennsylvania that manufacturers these sugar coated marshmallow treats (but are they really treats, or a diet/health saboteur?), has developed a NEW product for Easter '05:

It's a Peep sitting inside a hollow chocolate egg! I have to admit, I stopped walking rather suddenly in the Concord Super WalMart when I saw this. I think the JustBorn folks are onto people like me. I'm a curious person by nature, so I am intrigued with how they got the Peep inside the egg, what kind of seams there are on the egg, and what the condition of the Peep inside will be. Add the fact that I can rarely resist a Peep, and well, we have a likely customer.

Plus those bastards sent me a $1 off coupon for this new product via email. Yes, I subscribe to Peeps News and I am a Fan Club Member. Haha! Okay, the secret is out. But membership is free!

If I buy one of these new eggs, I'll do a review here. Stay tuned.

Here are some Peep fun-facts in the meantime:

Due to demand, Just Born now produces more than one billion MARSHMALLOW PEEPS® a year covering all of its holiday seasons.

It would take approximately 8,000 vertical PEEPS® to equal the height of the tallest building in North America, Sears Tower in Chicago.

In 1953, it took 27 hours to create one MARSHMALLOW PEEP®. Today, it takes six minutes.

People like to do curious things with PEEPS®- eat them stale, microwave them, freeze them, roast them, and use them as a pizza topping..

This Easter, Just Born estimated that more than 700 million MARSHMALLOW PEEPS® and Bunnies were consumed by men, women, and children throughout the United States and abroad.

It's now the day before my 30th birthday and I'm not feeling quite as centered and at peace with the world as I did in my previous post below. No, today I am feeling many different things.

Turning 30 is starting to freak me out slightly. What does this mean for me? Am I supposed to change somehow? I feel as if more is expected of me, now that I am an official "adult". Does this mean no more screw ups, no more buying sexy hot sandals instead of paying my electricity bill? Can I still be "me" and ALSO be 30? The two don't seem to go hand in hand.

Am I still young? Yes, I think so. But now, I think it's a different type of "young". Young compared to what's ahead for the rest of my life? Absolutely. Young as in fully capable of pulling the hot 18 year old at my gym? Not that I really want to, or would, but could I?

I'm not sure what turning 30 means. Maybe it means nothing. Maybe it's just another day.

What really sucks is that tomorrow, I will wake up on March 1, say Happy B-day to myself (or Feliz Cumpleanos, depending on my mood) and discover that I am snowed in with 17 feet of snow. All so I can sit at home and ponder my age and inner conflicts. Great.

I should be getting a psychic reading on Saturday in Salem, MA, so hopefully this will give me a bit of clarity. Or at least a year in review. And then we will have lunch, hopefully at Fuddruckers, where I'll have a big honking burger and fries, and a cookie for dessert. I'll need it to ground myself after the psychic. Yeah.

Everyone be safe during the storm.

Turning 30

Unbelievable.

I feel okay with being 30 (which won't actually happen until March 1, 2005 at 6:30 pm). I'm comfortable with myself and where I am in life, for the most part. I can't say I would have done anything differently in my twenties. I'm pretty much where I thought I'd be.

However. I thought by now I would have figured out what it is that I want to do professionally. I thought I would have "discovered my passion", followed it, struggled slightly and then become successful. So maybe by 40.

I didn't think I would still be in NH. When I was a little girl, I always thought I'd be in NYC by now, with some high status job and dating several successful and witty men whenever I felt like squeezing them in. In the past few years, I thought I would HAVE to move in order to be with my people.

Who are my people? I can't describe it, but I know them when I'm with them (which isn't very often). These are people who are friendly, genuinely nice, humorous, smart and fairly with it. I find aspects of this in people I meet while traveling, but rarely do I feel I am with my people. But I still have a lot of traveling to do! I am always hopeful.

I haven't made any goals tied into turning 30. I think it's a time to look back a little, evaluate what has happened and where it's gotten me, then boldly move on to the next decade of my life. If you think about it, I probably have 8 or 9 decades total to live, and I have just finished 3. Two-thirds of my natural life remains. That's a lot of traveling and a lot of figuring out and accomplishing to do. I feel well equipped - no major baggage (that hasn't been dealt with), no mental instability, I'm physically fit and generally happy with who I am. It'll be good.

That said, I have decided to go skydiving to celebrate turning 30 (I did say I have no mental instability, right? Just checking). I hope that my lover, partner, muse - there's no word that fully describes him (besides maybe SEXY - hope I'm not embarrassing you, baby) - will join me to specifically NOT celebrate his birthday on April 9.

Should be a good time.

Practicing self-love every day is so important, yet we often put it at the end of our list. Do the little things for yourself that no one else will - take a long bubble bath, cook yourself healthy and nutritious meals, take a walk just for the pleasure of it (not focusing on fitness), rent some movies, grab the PJ's and have a weekend to yourself. These things are on my list, but you know what little things make you happy. Write up a list and make the time to practice self-love. You deserve it.

Taking Care of Your Heart
by Arleen Kaptur

On Valentine's Day, we are proud to wear our hearts on our sleeves, on notebooks, gifts, and anywhere we want to add a touch of how we feel. Love is the word for the day and even children join in the fun with heart-shaped cards, candies with catchy phrases and boxes (heart-shaped, of course) that hold chocolates to give to mom, dad, grandparents, and everyone they love and care for.

Valentine's Day is a wonderful opportunity to show our feelings, our hopes for the future, and our fond memories of the past. It should also be a day that we show our love for who we are, where we came from, and where we intend to go. Wait a minute - loving yourself can go to extremes. We can lavish great luxuries on ourselves, much to the boredom of friends and those close to us, or we can feel guilty about caring about ourselves. There is a happy medium - a point that we can touch on that will let our heart know we care about the person it is beating for, and let our family and friends know that if we care about ourselves, we are well equipped to care about them.

How do you show that you care about yourself without become pompous and have an attitude? Well, reaching out to others expands the circle of people you know, bending a little to help others gives our rigid standards a bit of elasticity so we can appreciate the feelings of others, and stooping to help those who are down for the count actually makes us taller and our own outlooks brighter. Opening our hearts to those around us just gives strength to that "ole ticker" and letting even a stranger know that there is room in this world for each and every one of them, gives your space a bit more dimension. You see, whatever you do to and for others will rebound. This, however, is not a health hazard. It will make your life better, your hopes richer, and, not to mention, like the Grinch Who Stole Christmas, that size 5 heart will stretch and expand to size 10, 20, and really there is no boundary. This, however, is not a health hazard. Your heart will be healthier, stronger, bigger, lighter, and capable of loving more with each endeavor. The more you give of it, the more you get back. If you were in the business of finance, that is a solid ground to build a future on.

Whatever you do this Valentines Day, or the day before or the hundreds of days after, be good to your heart, and reap the rewards of loving and living in a world where there is room for everyone, and we can each have our own "space." The fountain of love never goes dry, and the mine of diamonds and gold never runs out of precious metals, and even outer space is not the limit to what people can do once they get started. Love yourself enough to love others and ENJOY!

Numerology and Ish

Check me out.
My Numerology using my birthdate, public and birth names, as well as nickname.

Tarot Card
(Equivalent of "3/1/1975")

The Chariot: Victory through might. Advancement through bold action. Change through force. Order established through vigilance. A trying situation mastered by balancing opposing forces against each other. Discipline, individual effort and endurance will turn the tide.

Sounds about right. Nothing happens if you don't make it happen.

Rune
(Equivalent of "Rebecca Eileen last name edited for potential internet stalkers")

Algiz can be easily recognized as the antlers of the elk that it represents. The elk can represent victory, but is much more appropriately associated with the thrill of the hunt itself. This rune therefore can portend vigor and success in active endeavors. Also, this rune seems symbolic of a hand with outstretched fingers - a protective hand. This hand may suggest that you will be shielded from things negative - the problems still exist, you are spared the brunt of their force.

I believe this is also true. Like everyone else, I've had some significant hardships throughout my life, but I have always felt somewhat cosmically protected. Cool.

Public Role
(Equivalents of "Rebecca ****")
Words that embody your presence are "Blues, Dragon, Finger, Island, Joker, Rook, Scream, Shackle, Slave, Tiger".

Words that embody the people or things that you interact with are "Ancestor, Grotto, Halloween, Martyr, Mustang, Neptune, Unholy, Virtue".

Words that embody things that you may be a part of are "Constellation". - A-ha... Astrology!

Words that embody people or things in your periphery are "Civilization, Entertainment, Illumination".

Private Persona
(Equivalents of "Becky")
Words that embody your presence are "Body, Chaos, Girl, Guide, Hacker, Hero, Madman, Shame".

Words that embody the people or things that you interact with are "Ambush, Bosom, Chosen, Flute, Focus, Grass, Mercy, Movie, Poor, Prey".

Words that embody people or things in your periphery are "Anonymity, Exhaustion, Numerology, Psychology, Satisfaction, Sensuality". - Yes, yes and yes. All of the above.

Alright, now this stuff is just getting scary. How can the number of letters in my name and birthdate tell so much? Astrology is a concept I understand. All the planets are in a certain place when you're born and if the chart is truly studied, undeniable connections can be made with one's personality and ways of thinking. But this process of numerology appears random, yet my nickname analysis seems pretty accurate. May be worth checking into further!

Now check yourself out below. Let me know what you find. By leaving a comment. On the blog. Not an email (although I always appreciate communication from friends). Stop being a lurker and participate in my blog. Yes, I am talking to you. We're all friends here, don't be afraid!

The Final Day

Today is my last day at my current job. See the big smile?

I started only 6 months ago, and to be honest, I wanted to quit within the first two days.

I've never worked in the consumer packaging industry, any type of production environment, and never with anything associated with fast food. I was definitely out of my element.

As my stress grew and the frustration mounted, my co-workers rallied. Those in my building commiserated with the workload and lack of cooperation from a key member. "Ryno" from The Jinxx'd dubbed the thorn in my side "Lapdance". It was the best laugh at work I'd had all week. The visual is very disturbing.

The fun group of professionals down the coast in Richmond always made me feel that everything was under control and would be handled. Everyone should have someone like that where they work, and I had a whole group! I was very lucky to be on their team.

I hope the people who received this link to my blog will stay in touch and let me know how they're doing. You will truly be missed!

For the Strong Women in My Life

A strong woman works out every day to keep her body in shape...
but a woman of strength kneels in prayer to keep her soul in shape.

A strong woman isn't afraid of anything...
but a woman of strength shows courage in the midst of her fear.

A strong woman won't let anyone get the best of her...
but a woman of strength gives the best of her to everyone.

A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the same in the future...
but a woman of strength realizes life's mistakes can also be God's blessings and capitalizes on them.

A strong woman walks sure footedly...
but a woman of strength knows God will catch her when she falls.

A strong woman wears the look of confidence on her face...
but a woman of strength wears grace.

A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the journey...
but a woman of strength has faith that it is in the journey that she will become strong.

-Author unknown

I'm very lucky to have such strong, motivated and beautiful women in my life. Keep being you, and whatever that evolves into. You're loved!
